I live in the Oldham area, and after many years decided to take up cycling again – it’s not only a cheap day out, but also an excellent way to keep in shape!
There are so many good cycling routes in Greater Manchester; there are canals both used and unused, on and off-road cycle paths, bridleways and old railway lines. In fact there are so many that with a bit of planning and research, you can ride around all day without hardly having to cycle on the roads.
Transport for Greater Manchester produces some excellent cycling maps. You can pick up paper versions in lots of different places, and electronic versions from their website. And don’t forget you can use Google Earth as well.
Another great thing is the cheap train travel within the Greater Manchester area. You can go somewhere for less than £5 and cycle back. I do it a lot!
If you are thinking of getting into cycling, try starting off with a very cheap bike. If you find it`s not for you, you can always resell it. And if you do get the cycling bug, you can always resell it and buy something that is going to give you a lot of pleasure and last a long time.
